A season in Middlemarch

Hi, folks!

This seems to be the season of readalongs for me: I am currently participating (and already behind) in The Old Wives’ Tale Readalong hosted by Rohan and Dorian, and now I decided to join in a group of Brazilian readers who will be reading Middlemarch throughout the season – it seems that a new Portuguese translation of this beast will be published later this year in Brazil, where the book is shockingly out of print since the 1990’s.

They asked me to create a reading schedule, and I thought it would be cool to post it here as well, in case some of you, like me, are crazy enough to jump in and tackle the beast with us. I’ve done something similar in 2019, when I re-read Middlemarch during the Summer – I wanted to see whether my hazy teenage impressions of the book had changed after so many years (they had), and it was a great experience.

Here is the reading schedule I will be following on this blog (I will update this post as I go along, and you will be able to see links to my thoughts on each of the sections):

  • Week 1 (21/06 – 28/06) – Book I: Miss Brooke (Prelude + chapters 1 – 6)
  • Week 2 (28/06 – 05/07) – Book I: Miss Brooke (ch. 7 – 12)
  • Week 3 (05/07 – 12/07) – Books II: Old and Young (ch. 13 – 17)

  • Week 5 (19/07 – 26/07) – Book III: Waiting for Death (ch. 23 – 28)
  • Week 6 (25/07 – 02/08) – Book III: Waiting for Death (ch. 29 – 33)
  • Week 7 (02/08 – 09/08) – Book IV: Three Love Problems (ch. 34 – 37)
  • Week 8 (09/08 – 16/08) – Book IV: Three Love Problems (ch. 38 – 42)
  • Week 9 (16/08 – 23/08) – Book V: The Dead Hand (ch. 43 – 48)

  • Week 14 (20/09 – 27/09) – Book VII: Two Temptations (ch. 68 – 71)
