Kunst-historisches Museum (I): at the temporary exhibition on Caravaggio and Bernini, my favourite piece was actually by Artemisia Gentileschi: I wasn't expecting to find her there, and my eyes just sparkled when I spotted her Maria Magdalena in Ecstasy, at a corner, luckily still unnoticed by the crowds. Artemisia always brings an unique perspective to her female figures, something we can never find in her (male...) contemporaries. Her Magdalena shows no trace of guilt, modesty, nor fear - instead, she is complete in the moment, a whole being, both strong and vulnerable, as though making herself available, almost like an offering, the true embodiment of ecstasy. 🌟 . . . #kunsthistorischesmuseum #caravaggio #artemisiagentileschi #terbrugghen

So this happened tonight - Woolf in Vienna, the first opera by a woman at the Vienna State Opera, and an adaptation of Orlando which promised to deal with queer identity: it checked too many boxes for me and I was eagerly anticipating it. But - oh boy. The second half, where Neuwirth continues the story until the present - I could not stop thinking: "Please, don't do this, please, you are butchering the book!" Maybe I am just being a cranky bitch here, but it felt as though I was watching some badly executed Orlando fanfic. Woolf's book is so full of nuance, and it is all lost in the adaptation. When a bunch of children entered the stage singing "We need to build a better future!", I could not stop my eyes from rolling. Maybe this was Neuwirth's intention, maybe she just wanted to give a big fuck to all that. What do I know? At least, the sharp contrast between the public's extreme formality at the Opera and all that camp happening on stage feels like a consolation prize. It makes me smile. (Hell yes, I am a cranky bitch.) . . . #orlandoopera #olganeuwirth #wien #vienna
