So this happened tonight - Woolf in Vienna, the first opera by a woman at the Vienna State Opera, and an adaptation of Orlando which promised to deal with queer identity: it checked too many boxes for me and I was eagerly anticipating it. But - oh boy. The second half, where Neuwirth continues the story until the present - I could not stop thinking: "Please, don't do this, please, you are butchering the book!" Maybe I am just being a cranky bitch here, but it felt as though I was watching some badly executed Orlando fanfic. Woolf's book is so full of nuance, and it is all lost in the adaptation. When a bunch of children entered the stage singing "We need to build a better future!", I could not stop my eyes from rolling. Maybe this was Neuwirth's intention, maybe she just wanted to give a big fuck to all that. What do I know? At least, the sharp contrast between the public's extreme formality at the Opera and all that camp happening on stage feels like a consolation prize. It makes me smile.
