Dorothy Richardson

Dorothy Richardson (Dorothy Miller Richardson, 17 May 1873 – 17 June 1957) was a British writer.

Richardson attended a progressive school in London, where she studied French, German, logic and psychology. At seventeen, when the family’s financial situation deteriorated, she went to work as a teacher in Germany. She also worked as a teacher in London, and later as a governess. In 1895, Richardson resigned from work to take care of her severely depressed mother. That same year, her mother committed suicide, while they were on vacation in Hastings.

Dorothy moved back to London, where she worked as a receptionist in a dental surgery. There, she associated with writers (including members of the Bloomsbury Group), political radicals, and European exiles. In 1907, she had a brief affair with H.G. Wells, which resulted in pregnancy and a miscarriage. She then moved to Sussex, to live on a farm run by a Quaker family.

In 1908, she started working as a journalist and translator. In 1917, she married the artist Alan Odle. From 1917 to 1939, the couple spent their winters in Cornwall and their summers in London, and afterwards they stayed permanently in Cornwall until Odle’s death in 1948. In the 1930s, Richardson was also active in support of refugee writers from Germany.

She was one of the earliest modernist writers to use stream of consciousness as a narrative technique.
