Cecília Meireles

Cecília Meireles (Cecília Benevides de Carvalho Meireles, 1901 – 1964) was a Brazilian writer.

She studied at the Instituto Superior de Educação in Rio de Janeiro, and started working as a teacher in 1917. Later, she also contributed to Brazilian periodicals and worked as translator. In 1934, she lectured on Brazilian literature at the universities of Lisbon and Coimbra. In the summer of 1940, she also gave lectures at the University of Texas, Austin.

Cecília Meireles died of cancer in 1964.

  • Poetry Prize from the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1938, for the book Viagem.
