George Sand

George Sand (née Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, 1 July 1804 – 8 June 1876) was a French writer.

Raised by her grandmother, Sand got married in 1822 and had two children. In 1831, she left her husband, and legally separated from him five years later. She had love affairs with Prosper Mérimée, Alfred de Musset, Pierre-François Bocage, Frédéric Chopin, and the actress Marie Dorval, among others. Later in life, she became close friends  with Gustave Flaubert.

She started writing stories in collabration with the writer Jules Sandeau, and soon published her first novel. Sand also published literary criticism and political texts.

Sand was portrayed in the film Children of the Century (1999, IMDb), directed by Diane Kurys.
